Eight Gifts for Chanukah

Chanukah (a.k.a. Hanukkah), is celebrated on the 25th day of Kislev and lasts for 8 days. Chanukah commemorates the victory of the Jews over Greek rule over 2000 years ago. The Syrians had desecrated the Temple of the Jews so when the Maccabees defeated the Syrians, they rededicated the Temple by lighting the Temple Menorah. They only found enough oil to keep the menorah burning for a day, but a miracle occurred and the menorah burned for 8 days. This is why Chanukah is known as the festival of lights. Make it special for your family and loved ones by giving something meaningful.

8 gift ideas for the 8 days of Chanukah:

Day One: Menorahs
Let there be light! Give a new menorah (candelabra) for the first day. The menorah in the Temple only had 7 candles. The significance of the 8 candles represents the miracle that took place in ancient Jerusalem. The ninth candle is used to light the other 8 candles. The Chanukah lights must light into the darkness of the night (near a window facing the street), transforming the darkness outside.

  Day Two: Jewelry
A gold or sterling silver "Star of David" pendant for your loved one.

Day Three: Challah Covers
Buy one or make a special one yourself (out of a white cloth napkin and fabric marker). Wrap it around a loaf of challah bread and enjoy!

  Day Four: Sweets
Chocolate gelt coins in festive containers or Dutch Apple, Apricot, or Raspberry Rugalah

Day Five: Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel.
Dreidel means to spin or twirl in Yiddish. The top bears 4 Hebrew letters describing the miracle this holiday celebrates. Give one or 8 different ones for each day of Chanukah.

  Day Six: Hodge Podge
The classic swiss army knife - Blue with "Star of David" for him.
An elegant silver plated honey apple dish for her.

Day Seven: Give a gift of learning
Opt for a class or series of classes like Kosher cooking or Hebrew classes. For the young child, teach them the Hebrew Alphabet with the Alef-bet Interactive Wall Hanging. Includes seven pillow toys each beginning with a different letter of the alphabet.
